23 JANUARY 2020 RACE 6 DAY 4 TLE It has been a slow and tricky beginning to the race. A familiar sight at the top of the leaderboard with Ha Long Bay, Viet Nam and Qingdao currently holding the top two spots respectively with WTC Logistics hot on their sterns in third. Rich Gould, Skipper of WTC Logistics, reports: “We are doing everything we can to claw Ha Long Bay, Viet Nam in, whilst shake off the rest of the fleet behind us, but in these light conditions it certainly is easier to follow than lead. “The chasing pack can see when we have sailed into lighter airs, or our wind direction has become less favorable and they can try and avoid it. With the whole fleet still so close together, we can still see most of the fleet on AIS, so have live data on each boat.” Collecting Rachel from Heathrow at 15.20 GMT. I will be waving a Clipper and a Sanya flag in the arrival hall. We have a “welcome home” and a “congratulations” balloon for her homecoming.

Sanya slipped lines, but will return with the rest of the fleet to the marina for 2 days to have water makers fixed . They will then, on Monday, motor out beyond the reef to find some wind to save time.

I think it is good that Clipper have listened to comments and decided to fix watermakers before tropical leg. Clipper’s defence of previous position did not sound right. Crew have paid to be treated well, with no short cuts and with minimal risk to health.

There also needs to be more transparency in information. To remove reference to water maker problems from the skipper blog was unacceptable, especially when the news was public knowledge on Facebook. Supporters have a right to know what is affecting loved ones.

Rachel, Gordon and Janet are heading south to Brisbane for flights home on 22nd
